Kasteel 'De Bruinhorst'

Kasteel ‘De Bruinhorst’ [De Bruinhorst Castle] is the most striking building in Ederveen. It is superbly located on a slightly elevated piece of land. Bruynhorst Castle was built in 1879 on the site of an older castle, which was probably demolished in the middle of the 19th century. The name Bruine Horst already appears in the 1651 verpondingsregister (tax register from the fifteenth century). Later documents show that this property was sold in 1764 to A.J. Baron Torck. In 1878, the estate came into the hands of Mrs S.E. Reiger-Fisler. She decided to excavate the moat and build a 'proper' country house. When its owners moved into the house in 1879, the entire village flocked to see it. Flowers were presented, a gate of honour was erected, music played and the minister gave a welcome speech. Currently, meetings of a church foundation are held there.
